4 things you should always look for in a wedding photographer
Your wedding day will be one of the most amazing and memorable days of your life – and your wedding photographs will be a reminder of that day for ever. So of course they need to be photographs you love, and that you’ll be proud to look at with your family and friends for years to come. Believe me, there are not many things worse than receiving your photographs back from your wedding photographer and they’re awful – I know this first hand because it happened to me.
I got married to Pete in May 2010. It was my perfect day, and like any bride I couldn’t wait to see my wedding pics. You can imagine how devastated I was when they turned out to be really shocking. They were completely lacking any attention to detail on the part of the photographer (my bra was even showing on some of them) and they were much too posed and very unflattering. All in all they were a disgrace... and they’re now hidden away in the loft, never to see the light of day again.
I cried my eyes out for days.
On the plus side, it was this experience that got me into photography. I soon discovered I had a flair for it and I’ve been in business ever since - with my own personal mission to make sure no other brides feel the same disappointment I felt 8 years ago.
So, with that in mind, here are 4 things you should always check when you pick your wedding photographer...
1. Do you trust them?
As we mentioned earlier, your photographer will be turning your wedding day into lifelong memories. That means you need to trust them implicitly to do the right thing on the day. Although you may have only just met, a good wedding photographer should be willing to spend time with you to get to know you and to build trust. So ask them!
As well as speaking on the phone and on Facebook, I regularly meet my brides and grooms 3 or 4 times before the wedding. This includes a visit to the venue with them – something I feel is very important so they know exactly what to expect on the day. This makes them more relaxed and the photographs more natural.
2. Do you like their style?
Us photographers all have our own style, and it’s very important you like the photographic style of the photographer you choose for your wedding. Ask to look at their wedding portfolio so you can see the type of photographs they take - then if you like their style, go for it!
3. Are they a ‘proper’ business?
If you’re using a reputable photographer they’ll give you a contract to review and sign. This benefits you both, and can save any arguments at a later date. It will also give you some comeback if anything goes wrong or something is missed. Insurance is also important. Your wedding photographer should have current public liability insurance, so ask to see it and make sure.
4. Are they reliable, with lots of previous happy customers?
For complete peace of mind you need to know your wedding photographer will turn up on the day and do what they’ve promised. One of the best ways to find out what kind of reputation they have is to look at what other brides have been saying about them. If they have a Facebook page you can check out their reviews. If they don’t, ask them why not – and ask if they have any other reviews/testimonials you can have a look at. Have they won any awards? Have they been published in magazines? All these things give more credibility to the photographer and more confidence to you.
If you follow these 4 tips your photographs will be magnificent and your wedding album will take pride of place in your home... not get stuck in the loft.
